OUR LEGACY

Our Legacy – A Fico Perspective

We have followed Our Legacy since the very beginning. Knowing the people behind the brand, we saw the first collections first-hand, but it wasn’t until around 2012 that we felt the brand had fully found its identity and was ready for Fico.

What convinced us was their contemporary take on classic silhouettes. The fabrics, fits and colours felt different – and they still do.

More than a decade later, Our Legacy remains one of the most distinctive brands in our selection. Not because of logos or obvious signatures, but because of something much harder to achieve: an exceptional understanding of fabric, fit and proportion.

When a new Our Legacy delivery arrives at Fico, you can usually recognise it immediately.

What makes Our Legacy different?

If we had to describe it in one word, it would be instinct.

Our Legacy has an unusual ability to find the right fabric for the right silhouette. When material, weight, construction and proportion work together, a garment gets a certain drape and movement that immediately makes it feel more considered and more luxurious.

This is something that can be difficult to see in a photograph but becomes obvious when you put the garment on.

There has also always been an attitude behind Our Legacy that we appreciate. The collections mix a playful punk and grunge sensibility with more dressed-up references – tailoring can sit next to something raw, oversized or almost deliberately imperfect.

There is an element of fuck you in the way Our Legacy approaches traditional menswear.

And that tension is part of what makes the clothes interesting.

From a Swedish independent brand to an international
fashion force

Our journey with Our Legacy hasn’t been a straight line.

The brand hasn’t always had the international position it has today, and there have been periods when its commercial performance has gone up and down. What has been remarkably consistent, however, is the creative direction.

Generous silhouettes have always been important, often contrasted with slimmer pieces to create more interesting proportions.

In recent years, the brand has grown dramatically internationally, creating opportunities to work with increasingly exclusive fabrics, treatments and finishes. Prices have consequently increased, but we believe these garments should be considered over time rather than judged solely by their price tag.

Our Legacy is driven by inspiration rather than trends. A great piece therefore rarely feels dated after a season or two, and the quality of the garments means that many of them can remain in a wardrobe for years.

For us, that longevity is an important part of their value.

Who wears Our Legacy?

The typical customer we meet at Fico is genuinely interested in fashion – someone who understands that a great garment isn’t defined by a visible logo, but by fabric, pattern cutting, construction and proportion.

They often also wear brands such as Acne Studios, Sunflower, Carhartt and Comme des Garçons, but we don’t think the clothes need to be styled with particular brands. It’s more about creating a particular expression.

Relaxed. Comfortable. Considered. Luxurious without looking like you’re trying too hard. That’s also how we style Our Legacy at Fico.

The same outfit should be able to work at the office, at dinner and later at a party simply by changing a few elements around it.

How does Our Legacy fit?

Our Legacy generally fits oversized, and that is intentional.

Generous proportions are an important part of the brand’s silhouette, so our first advice is not to automatically size down simply because a garment feels larger than something from a more conventional brand. The question is how you want the garment to look. If you aren’t comfortable wearing very oversized clothing, going down one size will often work well. With some pieces you can go even further.

The Borrowed Shirt, for example, has a deliberately generous silhouette. We often recommend customers who want a less oversized look to go down at least one size, and many of our customers choose two sizes below their usual size.

There is no universal rule, though. Fabric and construction affect how an oversized garment falls, which is why we prefer to look at each piece individually.

If you’re uncertain about a particular model, contact us and we’ll help you find the right size and silhouette.

How Fico buys Our Legacy

We don’t try to represent every category or every idea in each collection. Our selection is deliberately narrow. Every product we buy is, in one way or another, evaluated against its price:

Is this particular garment, in this particular fabric and with this particular construction and fit, worth what it costs?

That question is always in the back of our minds.

We don’t have a fixed formula for the categories we buy. Like the brand itself, we prefer to follow inspiration. Though, there are two exceptions.

In all the years we’ve worked with the brand, we can’t remember a collection where our order didn’t include shirts and shoes.

Those categories have consistently been among the strongest expressions of what the brand does.

Is Our Legacy worth the price?

This is probably the question customers ask us most often. The brand isn’t inexpensive, particularly if price is considered in isolation. But price alone isn’t how we evaluate clothing.

When you include fabric, construction, design, expression and how long a garment can remain relevant in your wardrobe, the calculation becomes different. A good piece can have an exceptionally long life.

One example from our own wardrobes is the Classic Silk Shirt. Johan bought his first one around 2014 and still wears it today.

The same is true of the Borrowed Shirt.

Both can be dressed up or down depending entirely on what you combine them with. More than ten years after buying that first silk shirt, it doesn’t feel like a piece from 2014.

That’s important to us.

Fashion is ultimately about design and expression. If you’re going to pay for those things, we’d rather pay for an original creative idea than for a version of something someone else has already done.

Three pieces to start with from Our Legacy

If someone walked into Fico today and said:

“I want to start wearing Our Legacy. Where should I begin?”

We would show them three pieces:

1. Engine Boot – Black

A shoe that works with almost everything and becomes more personal the more you wear it.

2. Borrowed Chino – Black Panama Wool

A great introduction to Our Legacy’s way of working with fabric, drape and oversized proportions.

3. Borrowed Shirt – More Check

A distinctive but extremely versatile shirt that demonstrates how the brand can make a familiar garment feel completely different.

The important thing is that these three pieces also work extremely well together. But none of them requires you to build an entirely new wardrobe around the brand.

Because of their materials, proportions and individual character, they can instead elevate clothes you already own. And for us, that’s one of the signs of a genuinely great piece of clothing.

Our Legacy at Fico

Fico has been buying Our Legacy since around 2012.

Our buyers have more than 46 years of combined buying experience, including formal design education, and our approach has always been to curate rather than simply accumulate brands and products.

You could say that we try to pick the raisins out of the cake.

We select what we believe are the strongest pieces from each collection and combine them with products from other designers to create a wardrobe for a modern way of living – clothes that can move naturally between work, everyday life, dinner and a night out.

It has remained part of our selection for more than a decade because, at its best, the brand achieves exactly what we look for:

exceptional fabrics, intelligent construction, distinctive proportions and clothes with enough personality to remain interesting for years.

What’s not to like about that? 🙂
